Live Music in Lufkin...
I was walking up the street in old downtown Lufkin last night headed to the Hidden Village Music Festival at the Standpipe Coffee House. A light rain was falling. The first person I met asked me if I was playing. I was not. They headed on off in the rain, I don't know if they were disappointed or decided not to stick around just in case I was lying. I stuck around. To the folks who say there is no more good music you need to check out the music schedule at this little festival for the next 9 days.
A local band the Sabine River Brass Band was playing on the patio when I arrived. I met and talked to the tuba player, Aaron. Nice bunch of guys. I missed getting his photo for my tuba player collection. It would have been a good one as he had a mohawk haircut. He asked if I knew any other tuba player with a mohawk. I do not. There are brass bands in New Orleans, New York, Romania and now East Texas. Welcome to the big city.
The headliner was a band from New Orleans, The Shiz. Think Alabama Shakes vibe with a nice dose of New Orleans thrown in. I think I like them better than the Shakes, at least live. I bought their cd and I will listen later. Here's a photo made with my new phone.

So when you tell me "Oh they don't make music like Bon Jovi or Beiber used to," check out what is going on down at the Standpipe this week. Every act might not be to your taste but I think all are tasteful and it's great to have this variety offered in our little town. I'll be back Monday night for the Howlin' Brothers. They are supposed to have a slide banjo player.
